Healthy Living Newsletter - Volume 3, No. 5 Special Holiday Update

Issue Date: November 21, 2006
Publisher: Mellanie True Hills, The Health & Productivity Revitalizer

Here's a Special Update because there is new information that may help as you start into the holidays.

Heading off holiday colds and flu

As we head into the holidays, it's worth a reminder that this is a risky time of year for our health, especially if you are a heart patient or have factors that could put you at risk.

A new study out of Poland confirmed that flu vaccine reduces the risk of death, heart attack, and the need for procedures to unclog arteries, so consider whether you should get a flu shot, or perhaps the new inhalable vaccine. It's a good idea to make sure that the flu vaccine you receive this year is "mercury-free".

Of course, the most important thing we can do is practice good hygiene, such as washing hands before handling food to prevent the spread of colds and flu germs.

If you feel a cold or flu coming on, zinc-based products, such as Zicam®, may head off your illness or diminish your symptoms. This can be especially important if you're flying this holiday season.

Do you have migraines?

If you get migraines from time to time, be aware that a new study found that men with migraines have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke). This follows recent findings of the same in women, especially those that are accompanied by visual disturbances, known as "migraine aura."

Women taking hormones (the pill or HRT) often have migraines accompanied by these visual disturbances, which we now know can increase your risk. If you're experiencing migraines due to hormones, please discuss this with your doctor to see what changes you can make to decrease your risk.

And for men and women, if you have migraines, try to minimize your other risk factors.
